The Great American Eclipse from Spain

Today we have the opportunity of seen partially the Great American Eclipse from the Iberian Peninsula, perhaps the eclipse which will be the most watched ever in history. This would coincide with the sunset with a percentage of occultation quite low.

For example, in Virgo the occultation will be only 12% while in the Eastern zone of Spain like Valencia or the Balearic Islands it will not be visible. However, in the Canary Islands the occultation of the solar disk will be up to a 42%.

In the United States the path of totality passes along important cities such Cleveland or Kansas, or very close from other important ones such Portland, Nashville or San Luis.

Where does totality stars in the USA? This will happen in the Pacific Ocean, in the state of Oregon at 10:15:57 PDT or 17:15:57 UT here totality will last for 1 minute and 59 seconds.

The point of longest duration of the eclipse is situated close to Hopkinsville in Kentucky in 36° 57′ 58.86″ N y 87° 39′ 50.76″ W (36.96635, -87.66410) with totality lasting 2 minutes and 40 seconds this happens at 13:25:31 CDT or 18:25:31.2 UT.

Finally, the eclipse leaves the American continent on the coast of South Carolina near Raccoon Key this happens at 14:49:00 EDT or 18:49:00, totality here last 2 minutes and 35 seconds, the eclipse continues it shadow along the Atlantic Ocean here.

Why some eclipses last longer than others? This happens because the distance between the sus and the earth is not always the same, likewise the distance between the moon and the earth varies. The distance between the earth and the sun can vary up to a 3 percent.

When will we see the partial eclipse here? In the Canary Islands the moon will commence to cover the sun at 20:00:00 local time or 19:00:00 UT which is 21:00:00 Spain local time. In the peninsula the eclipse stars at 20:45:00 local tome or 18:45:00 UT coinciding with the sunset over Spain and lasting until 21:20:00 approximately. The limit of visibility will be the line between Almeria and Saragossa.

We can see the event live through various media such NASA TVsky-liveSlooh or timeanddate.com. after the august 21 eclipse, the next North American eclipse will happen on April 8 of 2024, we have to remember that as average there is an eclipse on a local pace every 375 years. In Spain the next total eclipse will take place on August 12 of 2026.
