Supernova 2014J
On January 21st a group of astronomy students
and staff at University College London spotted what it turned out to be a
supernova in the famous nearby irregular galaxy of M82 known as the Cigar
Galaxy, which is located 12 million light years away in the constellation Ursa
Major.
As of Monday, January 27th its magnitude was 10.7 well visible in amateur telescopes, a telescope of at least 4” aperture will show it but and even if it is still getting brighter, it will not be possible to view it with the naked eye.
It has being designated Supernova 2014J, now that it is confirmed as a supernova, having a preliminary designation PSN J09554214+6940260.
M82 is a famous and liked galaxy, and to locate it, one can look along an imaginary line between the two end stars on the side of Ursa Major Merak and Dubhe, which projects to meet Polaris in Ursa Minor, M82 is the right of this line as it is projected in the direction of the Pole Star and about a bit less half the length of that imaginary line.

El 21 de Enero un grupo de estudiantes de astronomía y profesores en el Univeristy College de Londres se fijaron en lo que resultó ser una supernova en la famosa y cercana galaxia irregular de M82 conocida como la Galaxia del Cigarro, y que se encuentra a 12 millones de años luz de distancia en la constelación de la Osa Mayor.
El Lunes, día 27 de Enero su magnitud era de 10.7 bien visible en telescopios amateurs, un telescopio de al menos 4” la mostrara pero aun incluso que cada vez se hace más brillante, no será posible verla a simple vista.
Ha sido designada Supernova 2014J, ahora que ha sido confirmada como una supernova, habiendo tenido la designación preliminar de PSN J09554214+6940260.
M82 es famosa y un objeto que gusta, para localizarla, se podría imaginar una línea entre las dos estrellas en el lateral de la Osa Mayor Merak and Dubhe, estas proyectadas encuentran a Polaris en la Osa Menor, M82 es en la derecha de línea proyecta en dirección a la Estrella Polar y más o menos un poco menos de la mitad de esa distancia.
